Rowdy's Roundup: Week 3
Wow, can you believe it is already week three of the high school football season in Mississippi? I can’t. It has flown by so fast. Wow.
In this week’s roundup, we have some Top 10 cannibalism, upsets, and huge statement victories from teams on the list. Take a look at how they all did this week.
#1 Starkville - 23
#7 West Point - 7
Prior to this game, the last team West Point lost to was Starkville in 2016. Then, the Green Wave steamrolled their way to 30 consecutive victories. Then, the streak ended Friday at the hands of Starkville… in convincing fashion. Our No.1 team ran past West Point mainly in the second half. Calm down West Point. You ran into an absolute juggernaut. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
#2 Brandon - 14
Clinton - 19
Aaaaand, we have an upset. The Arrows jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and hung on for dear life. That Brandon offense that absolutely torched South Panola last week ran into a wall, Clinton’s defense. The Arrows are now 3-0. Man, these guys have been clutch this season. Very resilient.
#3 Tupelo - 6
Clarksdale - 0
Do these guys know how to lose in the regular season? I don’t think so. The Golden Wave escaped the Delta with yet another nerve-racking victory. Tupelo’s only score on the night came right as the first half expired. Jaquerrious “J-Rock” Williams punched in a 10-yard score, yes, he is still scoring TDs this season. Make that 28 straight regular season victories for #themblankets.
#4 Horn Lake - 52
Charleston - 12
Yep, that is Horn Lake doing things… again. They dominated almost every facet of the game against a real speedy bunch in Charleston. The Eagles scored 38 points before the half and didn’t look back. Let’s see how they do against a team from Oklahoma coming to town.
#5 Hattiesburg - 48
Moss Point - 13
Yeah, good luck to whoever plays this Hattiesburg offense this season. Trust me, you’ll need it. This defense also did things too, like allowing -17 yards rushing. Jarod “Snoop” Conner and Drexlan Allen make a deadly one-two punch. Hattiesburg is still unblemished.
#6 Oak Grove - 36
Laurel - 18
The Warriors continue to impress. It pretty tough to win between the bricks in Laurel. John Rhys Plumlee passed for 214 yards and ran for 58 yards. Oak Grove is still unbeaten. These guys are going to be a handful for opponents in the future. Laurel is a good team, they were just outplayed Friday.
#8 Northwest Rankin - 42
#9 Pearl - 0
Alright, The Cougars are for real. This lopsided affair is only one piece of evidence. They brought an 18 game winning streak to a stone cold end. P.J. Lindsey once again showed out as well as Jarrian Jones. Will they keep their winning ways going against their rival Brandon next week? Let’s see.
#10 Meridian - 10
Central Phenix City (AL) - 49
I guess the state of Alabama didn’t take kindly to Meridian beating one of their own last week. One of Alabama’s best teams dominated the Wildcats in almost every way. Meridian is now 1-2, against a few really good football teams. I don’t think it’s time to hit the panic button yet. They’ve been here before… as in last year. They made it to the 6A North Half title game last year.
