Rowdy's Roundup: Week 2
Welcome back! Week 2 is now in the rear view mirror. We had some rivalry games and intriguing matchups. Although none of these games were ranked vs. ranked, there were still games between two quality opponents. Let’s see how the Top 10 did this week.
#1 Tupelo - 35
Corinth - 29
After suffering a laundry list of injuries last week to key players, the Golden Wave went next man up. Man, did Corinth give Tupelo a scare. Jaquerrious “J-Rock” Williams scored FIVE TDs, including the final one in OT to win the game. Wow.
#2 Starkville - 56
Oxford - 7
I guess Starkville didn’t take kindly to being replaced at No. 1 in our Top 10 Rankings. They made a bold case in the 6th annual Little Egg Bowl game…geez. Dreke Clark scored three TDs and forced many turnovers in this one. The trophy will remain in StarkVegas for a fifth consecutive year.
#3 Brandon - 42
South Panola - 21
Although it wasn’t quite evident last week, this Brandon offense can be very dangerous. They lit up a pretty solid South Panola defense and pretty much controlled this one for 48 minutes. This was a nice showing by Will Rogers. This win was also highlighted by a punt return TD from Jonathan Mingo and a scoop-n-score by Richard O’Brien. Impressive win.
#4 Horn Lake - 51
Shannon - 6
Not a bad way to start off 2018, I might say. We all got to see this talent littered senior class go to work, and boy did they impress. This game was dominated in almost every category by an Eagles squad looking to claim the 6A Region 1 crown this season.
#5 Hattiesburg vs. Laurel
Tonight @ 7:00pm
Boy, will this be a fun one between two 5A title contenders. Fasten your seatbelts.
#6 Oak Grove - 41
Wayne County - 19
Again, we see that Oak Grove is a machine offensively. John Rhys Plumlee and company did their job and light up the scoreboard. Big matchup ahead against 5A title contender, Laurel.
#7 Northwest Rankin - 56
Ridgeland - 16
It took a little while, but the Cougars got rolling to begin the second half. P.J. Lindsey was once again a solid producer on the ground. Big game with Pearl up ahead. Let’s see if they can keep this thing going.
#8 West Point - 26
Louisville - 10
The Green Wave, once again, show us that they belong in the Top 10. Their most recent case is this nice win against a legit 4A title contender in Louisville. The ‘Cats hung tough for a while, but this was just West Point’s night. The winning streak now reaches No. 30 for the Wave. This sets up a Week 3 Top 10 matchup against Starkville. Grab the popcorn.
#9 Meridian - 21
Davidson (AL) - 13
The Wildcats sent their opponent across the state line empty handed and with a nail biting loss. Now, Meridian will have to travel across the state line next week to take on Phenix City. Let’s see if Meridian can get above .500.
#10 JDC - 25
Collins - 19
The first quarter didn’t go as planned for the Jags. The second quarter did, however. JDC overcame a 13-0 deficit and hung on for dear life from there. This was a great addition to the Cat Fight Rivalry.
