What Makes John Rhys Plumlee Elite
Oak Grove quarterback John Rhys Plumlee is athletic enough to play any skill position on either side of the ball. Plenty of times he’s shown the ability to take a snap and carry the ball the distance. But there’s no question that he’s just as dangerous with his arm, as he posses the ability to throw it accurately to nearly any spot on the field.
Against fierce rival Petal last season Plumlee showed the ability to connect on deep passes in addition to a a 95-yard scoring scamper. He torched Panthers to the tune of 292 yards through the air and another 174 yards on the ground, and in the process flashing his knack for making the right plays. All in all, he finished the 2017 season with 1,759 passing yards and 599 rushing yards and scored 14 total touchdowns in only nine games. As a junior he averaged 262 total yards per game - 195 passing and 67 rushing.
"It really means a lot," Plumlee told SES Mississippi. "It is a blessing for sure to be thought of so highly."
Entering his final prep season, Plumlee has taken full ownership of the quarterback position, and consequently the Warriors have an embarrassment of riches as it pertains to playmakers on the offensive side. However, it will Plumlee that kick starts Orlando Simon and the running game, as well it will be the senior QB1 that hits Kevin Barnett downfield in the passing game. It’s a thing of beauty to watch Plumlee operate in the Oak Grove offensive scheme. If he stays healthy this fall, he’s sure to provide many must-see moments and rack up big-time numbers.
As to why he belongs in this year’s Elite 10, it was simple. Few players in the state flash comparable athleticism, versatility, playmaking ability or leadership to degree in which Plumlee has in his career to date. He is the kind of player that any coach would like to have, and any teammate would want to go to war beside.
