What Makes Brandon Turnage Elite
There’s plenty to love about Lafayette’s Brandon Turnage, who was named the second member of the 2018 Elite 10 on Monday. With that nod, he became the second Lafayette Commodore to land in the E10.
Not only is Turnage one of the state’s most gifted athletes, but he’s also a winner. In 2016, his sophomore campaign, he blossomed into a two-way standout and helped anchor the Dores’ to a 4A state title that season. With seven interceptions he finished tied for the team lead, while also averaging nearly 17 yards per catch. He ended up as the team’s second-leading receiver with 23 catches for 381 yards and three touchdowns.
“It’s a blessing. I didn’t expect it,” Turnage told SES Mississippi.
Though Turnage was sidelined for much of last season while on the mend, his talents have long been made clear. First off, you have to respect the size and length of his frame, especially when he’s lined up as a cornerback - which he projects to at the next level. Then look at the film and see how he is able run with so much fluidity. He’s smooth, and he accelerates with ease. His size, speed and acceleration allow him to play both sides. His ability to flip his hips and stick with quick receivers, fast receivers as well as physical receivers allows him to play corner. His ball skills make him dangerous on offense as he can play the ball anywhere, as well as high-pointing it. Those ball skills, however, are what set him apart as a defensive back.
If Turnage can bounce back with a healthy season this fall, expect the Commodores to do the same. Last season Turnage took snaps at quarterback and showed a whole he can make plays from that spot as well. With utilization like that, as well as Turnage’s abilities, look for him to make a run at the Mr. Elite trophy.
