Catching Up With Kenny Gainwell
Yazoo County has put together their first undefeated regular season in school history this year, and it's no secret that Kenny Gainwell is one of the main reasons for their impressive 2017 campaign. The 5'11 185lb Memphis commit is one of the most exciting players to watch in the state, totaling up 7,659 yards of total offense in the past 4 seasons leading the Panthers offense.
Earlier this week, Gainwell was recognized as Mr. Football in Mississippi for 3A. I was able to catch up with Mr. Gainwell this week before his second round matchup against Water Valley.
SES: You were named the 3A player of the year this week. How did you feel about getting that prestigious award?
Gainwell: It felt good to be named 3A player of the year. I've been working very hard and put in a lot of hours. I just want to think the man above for the great talent he's given me and without prayer I don't think I'd be able to do what I do.
SES: How did you feel about your performance as a team this year, finishing the regular season at 10-0?
Gainwell: It felt great, we worked hard all summer for that and it payed off, this is the first time in school history to be undefeated and it makes me wanna grind harder in the playoffs.
SES: Speaking of the playoffs, what are your goals for the team as you guys prepare to make a run at the 3A State Championship?
Gainwell: We just have to continue to play ball and execute!! Our goal all summer was to get a ring and go out big, that's what we have to do.
SES: Is there a particular quarterback or player that you model your game after? Watching some of your film, you play the game eerily similar to Lamar Jackson or a Michael Vick since you're also a lefty.
Gainwell: I do look up to Mike Vick! People tell me I play the game like him all the time.
SES: If you had to pick one song to listen to before kickoff to get ready to play, what would it be?
Gainwell: Savages only- Migos
