Coverage Recap: Jackson Prep 37 | Jackson Academy 7
Jackson Prep proved once again it belongs among the state’s elite teams on Friday with a 37-7 pounding of rival Jackson Academy.
The #8 Patriots rode an impressive offensive performance to victory, a performance that included three rushing touchdowns from junior running back Jerrion Ealy. Ealy leads Prep in all-purpose yards this season and added significantly to his totals on Friday night. Ealy was joined in the scoring parade by his quarterback Chance Lovertich who threw two scoring passes, one of which was a tip-drill reception in the end zone by Cooper Carroll.
Not to be overlooked, however, is the Prep defense. The Patriots forced four turnovers, all of which were interceptions. The Jackson Prep defense has now forced 13 interceptions on the season and uses those turnovers to give their offense an extra boost to put points on the board. The Patriot defense worked harmoniously with their offense in dominating the Raiders for four quarters in the rout.
As previously mentioned, Jackson Academy could not consistently move the ball against Prep all night. Although the Raiders had glimpses of plays that made it seem as if they could make the game competitive, they would ultimately be spoiled by turnovers or penalties. The lone Raider score came on their last offensive possession via a draw by backup quarterback Asher Morgan. Morgan replaced starter Kinkead Dent late in the night when the outcome of the game was clear.
Although Jackson Academy lost, I was blown away by their facilities. My first trip to the Jackson area to cover a game was a phenomenal experience that was only heightened by the atmosphere put forth by the Raider-faithful. Add in the droves of Prep fans that made the short commute, and the ambiance was perfect for a night of rivalry football. With the win, Jackson Prep improves to 7-0 on the season and will travel to Oak Forest Academy in Amite, Louisiana, next Friday. Jackson Academy falls to 5-1 and will make the trek to Madison-Ridgeland Academy next week.
