Coverage Recap: Vardaman 39 | Coldwater 0
The Vardaman Rams picked up their second win of the season on Friday night to the tune of a 39-0 blowout of the Coldwater Cougars.
All of Vardaman’s 39 points were scored in the first half, and the coaches and officials agreed to run the clock after the intermission. While both team’s starters were in the game, the Rams dominated. Patrick Pratt intercepted his 17th career pass and returned it for a touchdown, a part of a three-touchdown performance. The other two Pratt touchdowns came via the ground and a pass from Trae Owen. This marks the second-straight week in which Pratt has reached the end zone three times.
Running backs Kody Townsend and Michael Williams joined Pratt in the touchdown parade as they each scored a time of their own on the ground. The aforementioned Trae Owen also scampered into the end zone himself Friday night on a designed quarterback run.
Although Vardaman put on an offensive show for the second-straight week, the real test begins Friday as the Rams welcome the Panthers of French Camp Academy to open Region 3-1A play. Vardaman is unaccustomed to this region and will need every bit of their offensive firepower if they want to make the postseason.
Coldwater, who is in their first season back on the gridiron after fighting tooth-and-nail to keep their school open, is in the midst of a tough rebuild: essentially having to raise a team up from scratch. Coldwater has always been home to talented athletes, but this talent-base is clearly still learning the game of football. Fortunately for the Cougars, they will spend the next couple of seasons as an MHSAA Independent as they regain their strength as a program and prepare to return to division play.
The goal for the Cougars should be to improve each week. Coldwater is made up of new players and new coaches and will have to gel together as a team as the season rolls on. Make no mistake, however. Coldwater has plenty of athletes. A name to watch for the Cougars these next few years is quarterback Corey Ward. Ward has speed, agility and a great arm and can be a talented quarterback if he continues to progress. Don’t be surprised if Coldwater is back on top sooner rather than later.
After the Vardaman win, the Rams improve to 2-1 on the season, and Coldwater drops to 0-3.
