Coverage Recap: Amory 31 | Saltillo 6

Heading to the locker rooms at halftime, it looked like we were in for a defensive battle for the rest of the night as Amory held a slim 3-0 lead over Saltillo. However, the Panthers offense exploded in the 2nd half with the impressive play of JJ Jernighan, Hunter Jones, and Trendon Gillon among others to produce 4 touchdowns en route to a 31-6 victory over the Tigers.

Senior Tailback JJ Jernighan led the Panthers offensively with 148 rush yards on 23 carries with 1 rushing TD and another through the air. Freshman QB Hunter Jones showed a lot of confidence in only his 2nd start, completing 14/22 passes for 160 yards and 2 TD's. The Breakout star of the night was Trendon Gillon, the Junior Wideout had 5 receptions for 73 yards and 2 big TD's.

The offensive explosion for Amory is a good sign for Panther fans, after a slow start offensively in the first 6 quarters of the season it looks like they're starting to get it figured out on the offensive side of the ball. JJ Jernighan is one of the top running backs in the State and he'll be a player you'll want to keep up with for the rest of the season. Amory now turns their attention to rival, Aberdeen, as the two face off next week in a game that's always big for both teams. Aberdeen got the best of the Panthers last season 44-34.

As for Saltillo and Head Coach Pat Byrd, coming off a great win against North Pontotoc the Tigers were just outmatched by Amory. With dual threat QB Tytus Heard running the Saltillo offense the team will have the opportunity to have a successful season and easily surpass last seasons win total of 2. Saltillo will host IAHS(Itawamba Agricultural) next week looking to avenge last seasons 28-12 defeat.
