Coverage Recap: Oak Grove 45 | Purvis 7
On the first Friday of the 2017 high school football season Oak Grove traveled to Purvis to take on the Tornadoes. The 6A Warriors are coming off of a very disappointing season in 2016 and looked to get things pointed in the right direction in Week 1 of 2017.
They achieved that in a blowout win over Purvis 45-7. Warrior quarterback John Rhys Plumlee showed glimpses of greatness in 2016 but last night he was great every snap. The junior can do it all. He ran through the ball with great accuracy going 14-16 for 233 yards and three scores. He added another 42 on the ground with a score.
Plumlee had a connection with junior wide receiver Kevin Barnett and it is th same type thing one would find around Laurel High School during the Keon Howard/Octavious Cooley days or Oxford High School during the Jack Abraham/DK Metcalf era. Barnett finished the night with eight catches for 160 yards and two scores.
Defensively, the Warriors are big and powerful. They hang their hat on players like Hayes “The Lumberjack” Maples, Jack Harris and Jaden Crumedy. These guys have that rare combination of power and speed and they created thunder and destruction all night long. The three also saw time on offense running and catching the football.
Oak Grove looked like a completely different team from last season. They were polished yet rugged. They were energetic yet controlled. It will be interesting to see how things play out for them in league play later this season.
For the Tornadoes, the 6A squad just proved to be too much for the 4A front-runner. However, Purvis running back Jon Bolton only needed a small crack of light to burst through for a 79 yard score. He will be able to do that a lot this season but on this night he had nowhere to run.
