Square Sports Report: Fortius Project
Monte Norwood looked up at the clear blue sky and smiled. It was early Saturday morning, the air was crisp and saturated with excitement on the gridiron. The DeSoto Central High School defensive end was one of more than 60 top high school football prospects from across northern Mississippi taking part in the 2017 Fortius Project Football Camp at Itawamba Community College.
“It is a lot of fun,” Norwood said. “I am going to a lot of camps - but this one - (been) looking forward to it.”
Players got to participate in individual drills at their position as well as timed running and pass scales.
Starkville High senior wide receiver Cameron Gardner was one of the award winning standouts on the day. Gardner showed off a unique combination of speed and strength and used his 6-4 frame to go up to get some tough catches.
“Being out there was a lot of fun and gives me more reps,” Gardner said. “Learning my position - it helps.”
Gardner, a teammate two years ago of current Ole Miss wideout A.J. Brown, has yet to grab any college offers entering his senior season but a camp performance like at the Fortius Project will change all that.
“I just have to keep grinding,” Garnder said. “I will have some (offers) before the fall.”
