Coverage Breakdown: 5A Championship
When: Saturday. 7:00pm
West Point Green Wave(13-1)
A year ago West Point was one player away from being the best 5A team in the state. This season, that one player came in the form of transfer quarterback Clayton Knight. Knight has been the final piece to the puzzle for the Green Wave offense. His ability has allowed athlete Marcus Murphy move around the field and torment defenses.
Defensively, the Green Wave have relied on a forceful pass rush along with nice athleticism in the secondary. The combo has allowed them to put down their rival Oxford not once but twice this season and they now find themselves just one win away from capping off a dream season.
After losing players like Keon Howard and Octavious Cooley, Laurel has no business having a good season this year. So much for that... The Tornadoes stormed through their schedule knocking off teams like Petal and Oak Grove early in the season and then rolling through their division.
They would face some of the state's top teams in the postseason and came away with wins in some extremely hard fought battles.
Coach Breland has done it by putting the ball in the hand of the most underrated and dynamic athlete in the state. Tyquan Ulmer has been unstoppable this season and senior wide receiver Dontario Drummond has been lights out.
How The Game Will Be Won
In order for Laurel to come out of this on top, they will need to continue their lighting up the scoreboard. West Point can put up a lot of points so Laurel will need to keep pace. That has not been a problem for them so far this season and their speed may make it easier than expected.
For West Point they will score points but can they score enough? This game will come down to the Green Wave needing to force punts and turnovers from the Tornadoes. If they can do that, the golden ball is headed home with the Wave.
