4A Playoff Preview
Pontotoc Warriors at Lafayette Commodores
Pontotoc has put together an incredible season. The only loss came in a road division game to Amory. Amory was knocked out of the playoffs last week by Lafayette in a 51-13 blowout. The Warriors will need to play flawless football. The Lafayette defense is the best they will see all season. Chances are, the running lanes for Gabe Harmon will be very small if not completely closed. This will be the outcome of this game in the hands of senior quarterback Jacob Carter.
Lafayette lost their first two games of the season but have not slipped up since. They have been rolling over the competition using a powerful running back in Jamarcus Quarles. The junior is averaging 156 yards a game on the ground. He can run over, around and away from defenders and if he gets going early, Pontotoc is in for a long night.
Florence Eagles at Poplarville Hornets
Florence has quietly put together a great season and it has been in large part to the play of their senior quarterback. Brad Dennis has thrown for over 1,500 yards and rushed for another 1,400. He really can do it all and if the Poplarville defense doesn't get a handle on him and the super sophomore Degerrick Lee early, the Eagles will be soaring all the way to the State Championship.
Poplarville has relied on its two-headed monster running attack. They have thunder and lightening. Senior Jesse Pernell is the thunder and he has rumbled to 1,485 yards this season while his speedy partner, Austin Bolton, has scorched his way to 1,477 yards. They make things very difficult for opposing defenses and this Friday night will be no different.
