SES Mr. Elite Candidate Spotlight: Willie Gay Jr.

The Candidate:

Willie Gay Jr.

Starkville High School

Willie Gay has been blowing up plays at the line of scrimmage for a while now. He has been chasing down running backs from sideline to sideline and giving opposing quarterbacks and coaches nightmares. He is a leader and in 2015, he and his teammates became champions. His senior season may not have ended the way he had hoped but individually, he was spectacular.

What makes him ELITE?

Three weeks ago the focus of what makes him ELITE would have centered around the disruption he can cause on defense. He single handedly causes teams to game plan around avoiding his side of the field. However, he did something quite special in the second to last game of the season.

Fighting for their playoff lives, the Yellowjackets put the ball into the hands of their senior leader. Willie Gay Jr., the state’s most dynamic linebacker, lined up at quarterback. He did not disappoint. In fact, he shocked the entire state. In his two games at quarterback, he totaled 565 rushing yards with nine touchdowns. That is elite.

The Numbers:

Regular Season:

Defensive Stats

11 games 83 tackles 1 sack 1 INT
