Coverage Recap: Lake Cormorant 31 | Oxford 20
Both teams punched their ticket to the playoffs prior to this game, so what did either team have to play for? A home first round playoff game was at stake in this game.
It was a historical night in Lake Cormorant as their Gators defeated the Oxford Chargers for the first time in program history, winning 31-20. It was a hard fought game for four quarters.
The game began with the Gators looking to draw first blood, reaching Charger territory. On 4th and 11, Will Guest’s pass was under thrown and intercepted by Devin Rockette. Rockette raced 80 yards the other way for a pick six. A failed two point conversion made the score 6-0 Oxford just four minutes into the ball game.
Lake Cormorant would be forced to punt the ball away on their next drive and the ball would be downed at the four yard line of Oxford. It would be six minutes into the ball game when Oxford first took the field on offense. McClure got sacked in his own end zone for a safety to make the score 6-2 Oxford. The sack taken by McClure would only be the beginning of the beatings that McClure took that night. Early in the second quarter, Lake Cormorant drove to take the lead, but were stopped in their tracks again with another interception. D.Q. Thomas picked off Guest covering the slant route and Thomas raced 60 yards for another Oxford pick six. The score at that point was 13-2 Oxford early in the second quarter. The Gators were determined to respond. Will Guest threw the ball to where only his receiver Brandon Smith could get it. He did just that for a 56 yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-8 Oxford following a failed two point conversion.
The Gators got the ball back with under five minutes until halftime. Guest found Smith again on a short slant route for a touchdown to take the lead. The score was 15-13 Lake Cormorant going into the break. The Gators offensively started to get hot. The Chargers on defense were playing well, getting two defensively, but the offense was struggling, getting only 63 total yards in the first half.
The Chargers came out of the gates rolling to start the third quarter of action. They got things started by throwing a pass to DeDe Pegues that reached Gator territory right off the bat. McClure then threw a fade route to Jaquan Webb 1-on-1 for a touchdown. Just like that, the Chargers were back in business up 20-15. The Chargers were continuing to find ways forcing turnovers with a fumble and another D.Q. Thomas interception on the Gator’s next two offensive possessions.
Then the turning point game. A promising drive was being plagued with penalty after penalty. On that drive, the Chargers fumbled near their own goal line and the Gators recovered for a touchdown to retake the lead. The score was 21-20 Gators after failing to get two points. The fourth quarter was dominated by the Gators. Brian Jackson found the end zone to expand the margin to eight points up 28-20 early in the 4th. The Chargers were determined to respond with a touchdown drive. The Chargers drove the ball down field and were later faced with 4th down in field goal range. Oxford faked the field goal by swinging the ball out the the kicker Gray Jenkins. The trick play was ruined with a tipped pass. The Gators drove to kill the clock and just about iced the game with a 30 yard field goal under a minute left. The final score was 31-20 Lake Cormorant.
With the loss, Oxford will travel to Grenada next week while Lake Cormorant hosts Vicksburg in the opening round of the 5A playoffs.
