Coverage Recap: West Lowndes 50 Vardaman 20

The West Lowndes Panthers left Vardaman, Miss., last night as victors in a pivotal 1A matchup. Although the Panthers topped Vardaman by a score of 50-20, the game was neck-and-neck for the majority of the first three quarters. West Lowndes' early points came via two touchdown passes from Casey Smith, Jr., to Marcus Farmer, whose speed and athleticism made those catches possible. West Lowndes was down a player in Quinshawn Lucious, who didn't make the trip due to illness. Marcus Farmer did a nice job picking up the slack left by Lucious's absence. Vardaman gained its first points on a drive laid on the shoulders of junior Deon Johnson. Johnson carried the ball numerous times on the drive, including once on a fake field goal attempt that resulted in a first down. The drive was capped off by a rushing touchdown from Brandon Washington, who took a direct snap from center. Late in the game, the West Lowndes defense stepped up big time and forced Vardaman into passing situations. The Panthers managed to pressure Vardaman quarterback Trae Owen and capitalized off of some turnovers leading to scores. After Friday's win, West Lowndes (5-2, 3-1 Region 1-1A) is sitting in a good position to attempt to host a first round playoff game. The Panthers will play host to the Hamilton Lions next week. Vardaman (6-3, 4-1 Region 1-1A) will attempt to rebound from this loss next week when they travel to Smithville for a division bout with the Seminoles. Players of the Game: West Lowndes: Marcus Farmer Vardaman: Deon Johnson
