Jacob Carter & His Warriors Are Rolling
When a player goes down with a serious knee injury it is difficult to tell how they will respond. The work to get back to anything that resembles normal is treacherous. Pontotoc field general, Jacob Carter has been knocked down in the past but keeps coming back and this time he looks better than ever.
Pontotoc sits at 3-0 and is currently ranked No. 3 in the state in 4A according to the latest SES Class Rankings. Their early success is due, I large part, to Carter's play. It isn't just that he has thrown for 778 yards with seven touchdowns, but his drive and leadership.
The perfect example of Carter's grit came early. In week one, on a rainy night with terrible field conditions, and the Warriors trailing in the second half, Carter did to adversity just as he had done to it time and time again. He hit it in the mouth and led his team back for the 24-14 win over the Houston Hilltoppers.
Pontotoc took care of business in week two against a tough Kossuth team that boast one of the state's top running backs in Jaley Adams. Adams proved to be every bit as good as expected but he performance did not hold up to that of Carter. The Warrior quarterback was 21-30 for 341 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a fourth score on the ground. Pontotoc would win 38-26.
This past Friday night the Warriors met New Albany. The Warriors would use Carter's 238 passing yards with three scores along with super sophomore running back Gabe Harmon's 200-plus yards on the ground to roll to a 41-21 win.
Pontotoc will play Water Valley this week and still has a long way to go this season. However, so far they have earned their place in the top 3 along with the defending South State Champion St. Stanislaus Rock-a-Chaws and the back-to-back defending 4A Champion Noxubee County Tigers.
With players following Carter's lead and stepping up all around him, Pontotoc is rolling. If they continue to improve and play with the same tenaciousness and consistency they have displayed thus far, the road to the 4A North Championship will go through the Hollow.
