SES TN: Smyrna Takes Down Stewarts Creek
The Smyrna High School Bulldogs (2-0) were the ones flying high on Friday night, taking down the Red Hawks from Stewarts Creek High School (0-2), 65-20. Smyrna’s win was their fourth straight against Stewarts Creek in the battle for Smyrna. Founded in 2013, Stewarts Creek is still looking for their first victory against their crosstown rivals.
Smyrna torched the Stewarts Creek defense by gaining 462 total yards of offense, 212 on the ground and 250 in the air. Stewarts Creek was able to run the ball well against Smyrna with 192 yards on the ground, but gaining only 56 yards through the air proved to be costly in their effort to keep up with the Smyrna offense.
John Turner looked impressive while quarterbacking the Bulldog offense. A Middle Tennessee State commit, Turner was 8 of 9 passing for 250 yards and 4 touchdowns, including a 64 yard touchdown bomb to Mason Cunningham to open the scoring for both teams. Casey Perkins started out slowly with -4 yards in his first 5 carries, but made a remarkable turnaround and finished the game strong with 3 touchdowns and 143 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Blake Watkins returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown near the end of the first quarter to push the Bulldogs lead to 23-7 right before lightning caused a 90 minute delay. Smyrna did not let the negative energy rub off on them, outscoring Stewarts Creek 42-13 after the delay.
Ryan Haraway led Stewarts Creek with 47 yards passing, connecting on 4 passes in 9 attempts. Keshawn Walker ran for 87 yards on 6 carries with a touchdown.
The Red Hawks will look to get their first win of the season as they open up Regional play next week, travelling to Franklin County. Smyrna will play their first Regional game next Friday as well, when they will host Coffee County.
