Coverage Recap: St. Martin 51 MRA 28
In 2015, St. Martin beat Madison-Ridgeland Academy 41-20 and it wasn’t even that close. It was a different story in 2016. Even with several starters out to injury, MRA was pumped before the game and felt that they had a chance to beat the visiting Yellowjackets. First drive of the game, MRA went 3 and out and had to punt it to St. Martin. St. Martin marched down the field and scored quickly. On the next series, quarterback Hunter Hulsey proceeded to fumble the ball to St. Martin in his own territory to set up another easy score for the Yellowjackets. The Patriots didn’t backdown though, and drove all the way down the field for a touchdown.
After missing the extra point, MRA decided to onside kick it and ended up recovering it. Once again, they marched down the field and scored again. This time it was on a long pass to wide receiver Lee Tanner. The Patriots went for two and converted so the game was now tied at 14.
Immediately after receiving the kick, St. Martin sophomore running back Javon McGee ran the ball 81 yards for a touchdown. Once MRA received the ball, they conducted a slow, methodical drive all the way down the field ending with another touchdown pass to Lee Tanner with 18 seconds left in the half.
At the half, the game was tied at 21.
St. Martin decided they were going to pound the ball the second half with quarterback Wayne Overman III (10 carries, 152 yards rushing, and 2 TD’s) and running back Javon McGee (9 carries, 140 yards, and 3TD’s). In the end, MRA made multiple mistakes that would turn the ball over to St. Martin. That is all Overman and company would need as they scored just about every time they touched the ball. In the end, the scoreboard read 51-28 St. Martin over MRA, although the game was much closer than the score.
