GoW: Thunder & Destruction

In recent years it would have been difficult to envision any game the Oxford Chargers were involved in being a defensive battle. However, last season they only scored seven points in a loss at Starkville.

This time around it’ll be Yellowjackets traveling to play at Bobby Holcombe field, but that’s not all that will be different. The Chargers feature a loaded defense in 2016, but Starkville’s is pretty good even with some talented departures after last season, as well.

There’s no question the game’s best player will be Starkville linebacker Willie Gay Jr. It’ll starts right there in the middle with him, but Jackets are good at all levels. The defensive line is anchored by Nelson Jordan, Jalil Clemons, Zach Edwards and Tyler Roach. Tony Elliot is a great compliment to Gay at the second level and Natrone Brooks is a talented corner that makes the secondary go.

In week one the Starkville defensive unit recorded three sacks and seven pass deflections. Brooks grabbed an interception, as well. They will look to be even more physical up front against the Chargers this week and hopefully record more turnovers. Oxford quarterback JR McClure threw three interceptions in week one.

On the other side, the Chargers are working with one of the best defensive units in some time. It all starts in the back seven. At linebacker there is Quentin Wilfawn, DT Thompson and DQ Thomas. Thomas could be bound for the SEC and Mississippi State, while Thompson and Wilfawn are just as steady.

In the secondary for the Chargers is another Ole Miss commit in Devin Rockette at corner. However, CJ Terrell was the best playmaker in the secondary last week with two picks, including one that sealed the win.

Up front the Chargers are looking to replaced Korbin Harmon, who had been such a force the last three seasons. They have promising group, however, headed by Nicholas Sisk, Kent Hickinbottom, Xavian Herod and Jerry Quiller Jr.

Last season when these two teams faced off, it was all about the offensive stars. Jack Abraham, Montario Montgomery, DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Zach Cousar and others. This year, the majority of the star power is on defense. Look for one of the units to be the reason their team wins, but both units will ensure we see a great game.
