Tony Bowman For The Win
The Rosa Fort Lions made noise last season after going 9-3 and advancing to the second round of the 4A playoffs. Looking ahead to next season, though, it appears the Lions could be poised to be an ever tougher out.
Offseason improvement of returning players should tell the tale. With sophomore quarterback Dontarius Cosby already penciled in to attend the Fortius Project at ICC on April 30th, the offense could be in for a big time surge.
The Rosa Fort defense should see the same as junior defensive end Tony Bowman has also signed up to compete at Fortius.
“I think Fortius is one of the camps that can get my talents to the D1 colleges,” Bowman told SES Mississippi.
In 2015 Bowman tallied 109 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, including a 62-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in a win against Byhalia. He forced four fumbles against Byhalia that day.
“I love stripping the ball each and every chance I get. It helps my team get a chance to score off the turnover,” He said.
Besides his ability to take the ball away from offenses, he feels like two other areas of his game will impress those who see him compete at Fortius.
“The way I come off the ball and pursue the quarterback really shocks me at times,” Bowman said. “When I come off the ball I’m like a train, the only thing that stops me is the whistle.”
To improve his game, though, he is working for quicker foot speed and more flexibility. It’s easy to imagine him bettering his insane numbers if he does indeed upgrade those skills.
If Rosa Fort is going to better their finish from last season, the weight room is where it will start for not only Bowman but all of his teammates, he says.
“It starts every day in the weight room. I love to lift. I want to work hard and motivate my teammates to stay focused and stay in the weight room,” He explained.
At the end of the day the only thing that matters to Bowman is winning. Not the sacks or the tackles or even the forced fumbles are his favorite part of football.
“When my team gets to walk off the field with the win,” He said when asked what his favorite part of football is.
