6A: The Breakdown
As you would expect in the heavyweight match-up of the card, the two teams facing off to claim the 6A crown are playing white hot. Starkville hasn't lost since their opener and have won 13 straight, including two wins over Madison Central, two over Clinton and one over Oxford. Then there are the Petal Panthers who are winners of seven straight. During their streak they have won two against Meridian, who they defeated last week for the 6A South state crown, and Brandon, avenging a regular season loss.
Starkville is a juggernaut on both sides of the ball. It starts with the talent on the defensive side of the ball with Kobe Jones, Lorenzo Dantzler and Willie Gay. On offense QB Montario Montgomery was prolific, tossing 27 TD passes. AJ Brown rushed and caught well over 1,000 yards and had double digit scores through the air and on the ground, as well. They have been a force and became the 6A favorite after South Panola fell.
The offensive battery for Petal has been pretty good this season, if not great at times. Quarterback Sam Hopper threw for 2,426 yards and 22 TDs this season. While running back Stephon Huderson rushed for 2,031 yards and 22 scores. Huderson ran for around 145 yards per game to go with Hopper's 173 yards per game through the air and you have most all of the Panther production right there. Those guys and their teammates will be looking to stay hot.
