3A: The Breakdown
The 3A Championship features familiar faces. Charleston and Collins battled it out last season for the 3A crown and are set to do so again on Saturday at 11:00am at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford at Ole Miss.
In 2014, Collins outlasted Charleston in OT for a 28-20 win to claim the title.
A lot of familiar faces return for Part II. Including Collins quarterback Detric Hawthorn. The senior signal caller has thrown for 3,930 with 39 touchdowns along with 1,171 and 15 scores. Along with the great quarterback play, Collins has also used a great running attack with senior Timothy Durr who has totaled 1,171 and 22 touchdowns. Defensively for the Tigers, senior Derric Hawthorn leads the way with 86 solo tackles while Tristan Johnson has nine sacks.
For Charleston, the offense revolves around one of the state’s top defenses led by senior Tyjour Jones. He has totaled 16 sacks this season. The Charleston secondary has racked up an incredible 22 interceptions this season. They will need to be geared up and ready for the strong passing attack from Collins.
The Charleston offense uses a stable of running backs. They have six players with over 220 yards rushing, three of 640 yards rushing and two with over 800 yards rushing.
The battle really comes down to the Collins passing offense and the Charleston pass defense. Who ever outduels the other in this department, wins the game.
