Column: A Year To Remember

by Webb Lewis

The 2014 season was our first here at Southern Elite Sports and it was a great one. We covered some of the state’s top games. We were able to see some great players and experience some amazing fans. It has been fun traveling around the state and see different high school fields and meeting different coaches. Here are a few of our highlights and things we learned from 2014.

All summer Tupelo High School players, students and fans used the hashtag #themblankets. I was not sure what that meant and was actually having trouble getting to the bottom of it until the first game of the 2014 season. Tupelo traveled to Lafayette to kick off the year and it was there that I discovered that the nickname came from none other than Tupelo SID T. Braden Bishop. Apparently back in his glory days at Ponotoc High School he made a comment that Tupelo’s logo looked like a blanket. Well, it stuck.

Air Davis

Starkville added transfer quarterback Brady Davis to their roster this past spring and it paid off in a big way. Davis was a hidden talent as a three year starter for New Hope so his transfer did not make many headlines until Starkville rolled Brandon in the spring game. Davis exploded onto the 6A scene in 2014 and showed why he is now considered one of the best passers in the country.

Northeast Jones Is Football

The atmosphere on Friday nights at Northeast Jones is electric. The smell of the fresh cut grass and the sound of the bands playing make for a perfect high school football atmosphere. Mix in the fact that the Tigers play tough hard nose between the tackle football and you get a perfect concoction of what Friday night football in Mississippi should be.

King Is One Of A Kind

Central Hinds running back/linebacker Brian King is a rare type of athlete. He is fast enough to play wide receiver and beat corners deep. He is strong enough to run between the tackles 30 times a game. He is smart enough to dissect a play from the linebacker position and wreak havoc on opposing offenses. He will go down as one of the best to do what he has done.

Laurel Will Play Oxford Again

This one has not happened yet so you can call it my first prediction of 2015. Laurel will play Oxford for the 5A title again next season. Mark it down. This time around it will be at Ole Miss and the Charger Blue will be out in full force but Laurel will come loaded with the same talent that beat Oxford for the crown this year.

SES Is Just Getting Warmed Up

This season was a blast for us here at SES but just because the final horn has sounded on the 2014 year doesn’t mean that we will be slowing down. We will continue to check in with players, teams and coaches throughout the winter leading into spring training. Thank you for all of your support in our first season. We look forward to continuing our coverage of Mississippi High School Football for many years to come.
